Here are some references I've found especially useful.  If you purchase them through these links, you help keep LiveWire Unicycles going as a unicycle-only company!

If you have a reference that you have found specifically benefits your unicycling experience, please let us know and we'll check it out.  If we post it here, we'll thank you specifically in the supporting text.

General

Zinn's Cycling Primer: Maintenance Tips & Skill Building for Cyclists

A thought-provoking manual, by a well-known author, rider, and custom bike builder, that covers the range of bicycling behavior.  Not for newbies. The book jumps right into highly detailed explanations that are suitable for riders that are serious about riding and want to systematically improve their cycling.  Distance unicyclists will find the chapters on setup and conditioning stimulating and helpful.  Here are the Chapter Titles:

  1. Initial Setup

  2. Fine-Tuning Your Body

  3. Road Bike Skills

  4. Mountain Bike Skills

  5. Road Bike Maintenance and Tuning

  6. Road and Mountain Bike Maintenance and Tuning

  7. Mountain Bike Maintenance and Tuning

A big bonus is Zinn's mention of a unicycling team riding in England!   I'll leave it for you to find...

Training

The Lance Armstrong Performance Program: Seven Weeks to the Perfect Ride

A reference for amateur bicycle racers that want to focus in for a specific race.  Treats a variety of topics in a general way that helps a rider develop a sense for the spectrum of techniques, behaviors, and approaches that will improve his or her performance.  Suitable for new racers or experienced.  Most of the book is easily transferred to the unicycling world, and can be used for general training as well as race-specific training.  Topics include: specific workout types, recovery, strength training, spinning, mental toughness, climbing, and time trialing.

Wheelbuilding

The Art of Wheelbuilding: A Bench Reference for Neophytes, Pros & Wheelaholics

Gerd Schraner's book is very practical. It also has a unique historical perspective, since it looks back over the author's 45 years of building wheels for professional bicycle racers.  It has bios of some of Schraner's more famous customers, and lots of great photos. An excellent reference that is not as engineering-bound as Jobst Brandt's (see this section for the link).

The Bicycle Wheel

This is Jobst Brandt's modern engineering study of the wire-spoked bicycle wheel.  While a little lacking with respect to the unicycle wheel's heavy-duty lateral forces, it provides a lot of insight for the careful reader.
